Chinese Dragon Boat Festival

The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as the Fifth Month Festival,it is one of China's four major traditional festivals, ranking alongside the Spring Festival, Qingming Festival, and Mid-Autumn Festival. It is on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month each year. The Dragon Boat Festival is not only a commemoration of history but also a prayer for a better life.

Origin of the Dragon Boat Festival

The history of the Dragon Boat Festival can be traced back to the Spring and Autumn-Warring States periods. Initially, it was a festival held by tribes in the southern coastal areas who worshipped the dragon totem for totem sacrifice.

Later, there were various explanations for the origin of the Dragon Boat Festival, the most well-known of which is in commemoration of the patriotic poet Qu Yuan. Qu Yuan was a minister of the Chu State during the Warring States period. He advocated selecting capable people and strengthening the country through military expansion. Due to his firm advocacy of an alliance with Qi against Qin, he was framed, removed from his position, and exiled. After the Qin army broke through the capital of Chu, Qu Yuan was deeply distressed and threw himself into the Miluo River with a stone tied to his body on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, sacrificing his life for his country. To commemorate him, people flocked to the riverside to mourn and threw food into the river to prevent fish and shrimp from biting Qu Yuan's body. This behavior gradually evolved into the custom of eating zongzi. Dragon boat races are also held in his memory.

Customs of the Dragon Boat Festival

Dragon Boat Racing: Dragon boat racing originated from the reverence for the dragon ancestor. People row ornately decorated dragon boats, competing to move forward on rivers, lakes, and seas. The sound of drums echoes loudly, and water splashes everywhere, creating a magnificent scene. This activity is a prayer for good weather and the avoidance of disasters and evil spirits.

Eating Zongzi: Eating zongzi is one of the most important customs of the Dragon Boat Festival. Zongzi are made by wrapping glutinous rice and other ingredients in bamboo leaves or reed leaves. They come in various shapes and emit an enticing aroma. They are not only delicious but also a deep remembrance of the patriotic poet Qu Yuan. Families will start making zongzi before the festival. On the festival day, family members gather together to eat zongzi and celebrate the occasion.

Hanging Mugwort: During the Dragon Boat Festival, people hang mugwort and calamus in front of their doors or windows, using their special aroma to ward off mosquitoes and diseases. This symbolizes the driving away of evil spirits and diseases and a prayer for well-being.

Drinking Realgar Wine: Realgar wine is believed to have the effect of driving away evil spirits and diseases. People drink it in moderation or apply it to their foreheads, palms, and other parts of the body to pray for good health.

Wearing Sachets: Wearing sachets is a prayer for peace and good luck. The sachets contain various fragrant materials such as mugwort, calamus, realgar, etc., emitting a light aroma. They are both beautiful and practical.
